The running season is starting again so watch out for injuries

Running is a complete sport that is good for the heart, head and lungs. But, although it is good for your cardiovascular health, orthopaedists and osteopaths know it better as a constant stream of patients with ankle, knee and hip problems.

More accidents in the springtime

Neon is all the fashion as the season starts for runners. Since 2018, more than 20,000 Luxembourgers have taken up running.

When you start out, you may set yourself a health or sports target: run twice a week, sign up for a trail run or do a half-marathon before the end of the year. That’s a great idea but don’t be too hasty in your pursuit of this goal. Give yourself time to get back into shape.

Sprains and joint problems are much more common in legs that aren’t in good shape. Take one step at a time, warm up, stretch before and after exercise and rest when necessary.

Are you suitably insured against injury and accident?

There are several suitable insurance packages for runners (and athletes in general):

  • Accident insurance: this covers the fallout from an accident, such as providing assistance when you are out of action, fitting out your home in the event of permanent disability or compensating your loved ones in the event of death (this cover may be included in your home policy).
  • Private liability insurance: this policy covers damage caused by you, such as scratching a parked car or accidentally shoving a pedestrian (this cover may also form part of your home policy).
  • Health insurance: this supplements social security payments for specific care and provides better payments. It also covers you for other types of care such as alternative medicine, osteopathy, chiropractic and Chinese medicine.
  • Assistance: useful if you needed to be repatriated after a fall during a trail run somewhere abroad.

If you do other sports apart from running and want to protect your equipment there is also:

  •  All-risk insurance: this insurance covers sports equipment for certain sports including cycling, golf, racquet sports, scuba diving, horseback riding, skating, hunting, fishing or snow sports (this cover may be included in your home policy).

So, bearing all this in mind, it’s time to get those trainers on!
