Digital car insurance certificate: no more paper required in your car

Since 1 January 2026, proof of car insurance – the former “green card”, now white,  can be presented in electronic form, for example on a smartphone. The key is to be able to show a valid, readable and up-to-date certificate during a vehicle check, even if it is no longer printed and stored in the car.

Who is concerned?

All drivers insured in Luxembourg:

  • Residents whose vehicle is registered in Luxembourg.
  • Cross-border commuters with a vehicle insured in Luxembourg.
  • Occasional drivers of a vehicle insured and registered in Luxembourg.

PDF, photo, client area – which formats are accepted?

Luxembourg law does not impose any specific format for the electronic certificate. It may be a PDF received by email, a document downloaded from the insurer’s customer area, or a clear photo of the paper certificate.
Make sure the file is readable, easily accessible, even if it’s offline, and ensure that the screen allows quick, easy proof of insurance  by an law enforcement officer.

What habits should you adopt?

Before hitting the road, check the validity of your policy and certificate, especially after changing your vehicle or licence plate. Also inform occasional drivers where the file is stored on your phone or in your insurance app so they can present it if stopped.
Consider keeping a digital copy in a secure storage service (cloud, digital safe) to avoid losing it in case of phone change or breakdown.
